Attorney General said the books were hie ( Saz Iu's ) and he was entitled to make an catry. I pointed out that they did

not belong to the mau, that they had been handed in as exhibits and no one h♫ any right to make any alteration. I wanted to know if we could prosecute the man and the learned Astorney General said that we might take the evidence of Mr Lau and of the shroffs and submit it to the Attorney General

and he would give his opinion on the matter.

Sanitary Board contractors, with a shroff from Fung Ta Chun's

office. He noticed a few suspicious itens in Shan Ja's books and

laid aside six of them. These six books I locked up together

with some youchers which I took from Shan Iu's pile of books and

papers myself.

Shaw lu was referred to me by the Secretary to the Commission to

· get certain books back and to copy certain items from his books.

I gave him back all the books that I thought he might have back

and kept the six and the vouchers. On the 1st and 2nd inst he

kept calling at my office and wantedto make more copies. I told

him to come on the 3rd. At 9.30 a.a. on the 3rd, I had to go to

Bee my, general managers and then to attend the meeting of this

* Commission at 10.80 s.m. and so I had no time to see Shan Iu.

Before I left my office I took out the books and handed them to

my

assistant Pang Sui Han and told him that whon Sham Iu called

" he was to allow them to copy such itens as he wanted, but he

must watch him and not let him take away the books or vouchers.

This morning ( 4th July 1906 ) I wanted to refer to the item

which says that £4.00 was paid to Woolley and when I came to the
