With reference to your letter No, Secret Hong Kong of the 14th
1897
of April I am directed by the Secretary of State for War to for-
ward for Mr-Chamberlain's information a copy of a further letter
which, by Lord Lansdowne's direction, has been addressed to the For-

mainland to complete the defences of Hong Kong.
