With reference to your letter of the 21st January 1897 I am

directed by the Secretary of State for War to forward for Lord

Salisbury's information a copy of a confidential communication

from the Pritish Consul at Canton,received by the General officer

Commanding the Troopa at Hong kong through the Governor of that

Colony.relative to the acquisition of land on the mainland to

complete the defences of Hong Kong.

It would appear from this communication that the present

moment may be favourable to approaching again the Chinese Govern-

ment on this very important point, and Lord Lansdowne would be very

glad to learn that Lord Salisbury is now able to take action in

the matter.
