MINISTRY OF CIVIL AVIATION,

ARIEL HOUSE,

STRAND,

LONDON, W.C.2.

14th January, 1946.

Dear Bigg,

You will wish to be aware that since the discussion at the Air Ministry on 13th December about the developments of airfields in the Far East it has been decided to send out a joint Air Ministry/ Ministry of Civil Aviation Mission to Hong Kong to examine on the spot the Ping Shan site with a view to establishing beyond doubt that there is in fact no other and superior alternative in the Hong Kong area.

As you know, the R.A.F. have provisionally selected Ping Shan and, although it is recognised that the site suffers from certain limitations, it is said to be the best one if not the only one available offering the requisite dimensions.

Hong Kong will be so important from the Civil Aviation point of view in the future that we feel we must be completely satisfied that the best site is chosen - hence the forthcoming Mission. The party will consist of representatives of the Air Ministry and the Ministry of Civil Aviation, and B.O.A.C. have also been invited to nominate an operational member of their staff to join the party. As at present planned, the party will leave the U.K. on 22nd January and will probably

for about three weeks.

Yours sincerely,

W.J. Bigg, Esq.,
