CHEMICALS AND DRUGS.

Imports totalled $4.5 millions as compared with $5.7 millions and exports $2.9 millions as compared with $8.3 millions.

Imports of Acids (all kinds) amounted to 9,359 pieuls ($77,061) as compared with 8.039 piculs ($102,972).

There was an increase in the value of Insecticides imported, from $182,000 to $201,000 whilst exports declined from $116,000 to $93,000. As in previous years the bulk of the import of Insecticides was of Japanese origin.

Imports of Soda Ash decreased from 110,270 pieuls ($430,887) to 96,965 piculs ($285,072), but the imports from Japan increased from 12,243 piculs ($61,727) to 19.202 pieuls ($58.500).

Imports of Pharmaceutical Products declined from $1.9 millions to $1.4 millions. and exports froin $866,000 to $836,000. Imports from the United Kingdom fell from $446,000 to $364,000, Germany from $708,000 to $513,000), U.S.A. from $218,080 to $214,000, and France from $211,000 to $78,000; whilst imports from Japan increased from $10,000 to $50,000. Exports to North China and British Malaya showed decreases, but exports to South China increased from $284.000 to $355,000.

CHINESE MEDICINES.

Imports totalled $13.0 millions as compared with $16.8 millious, and exports $10.3 millious as compared with $11.8 millions; unenumerated items accounted for $9.1 millions of the imports, and $8.6 millions of the exports.

Imports of Cassia amounted to $987,823 as compared with $846,907.

Deer Horn imports declined from $586,000 to $308,000,

Imports of Ginseng declined from $4.0 millions to $22 millions, the U.S.A. product falling from $2.9 millions to $1.4 millions, and the Japanese product from $292,000 to $138,000.

DYEING AND TANNING MATERIALS.

Imports totalled $4.3 millious as compared with $3.7 millions, and exports $3.6 millions as compared with $3.2 millions.

Imports of Aniline Dyes (not including Indigo) increased from $2.1 millions to $2.4 millions, and exports from $1.2 millions to $1.4 millions.

Imports of Artificial Indigo were more than doubled. 9,388 piculs ($832,198, arriving as compared with 4,441 piculs ($520,778). Exports totalled 10.808 piculs ($1.1 millions) as compared with 5.678 piculs ($773,389). Imports from the United Kingdom increased from 202 piculs to 3,098 piculs; Holland from 75 pieuls to 245 pieuls; Germany from 1,963 pieuls to 3,363 piculs; and U.S.A. from 665 piculs to 1,356 piculs.

FOODSTUFFS AND PROVISIONS,

Imports totalled $108.0 millions as compared with $126.5 millions, and exports $82.2 millions as compared with $102.2 millions.

Imports of Beans (all kinds) increased from 615,564 piculs (83.0) millions; to 641,264 piculs (33.1 millions).

Imports of Marine Delicacies, including Agar Agar, Arabi, Beche de-mer, Conpoy. Cuttle Fish, Prawns and Shark Fins, increased from 93,418 pients ($4.9 millious; to 103,242 piculs ($48 millions).

Imports of Fresh Fish increased from 180,174 pients ($1.6 millions, to 193,020 piculs ($2.1 millions), French Indo-China being the chief source of supply.

Imports of Wheat Flour increased from 1.1 million piculs ($6.6 millions) to 1.5 million piculs ($7.5 millions), and exports from 783.381 piculs ($4.8 millions) to 1.1 million pieuls ($5.4 millions). Imports from Australia increased from 480,663 piculs to 1,907.889 piruls, whilst imports from U.S.A. declined from 294.023 piculs to 116,168 piculs.

Imports of Rice (all grades) amounted to 9.6 million piculs ($33.0 millionsy as compared with 13.4 million piculs ($44.4 millions). Ituports of White Rice unbroken) amounted to 4.4 million pients ($18.5 millions) as compared with 6.2 million piculs ($27.0 millions); and exports to 3.0 million pieuls ($12.9 millions) as compared with 4.5 million piculs ($19.5 millious), Imports of Broken White Rice amounted to 2.4 million piculs ($7.4 millious) as compared with 3.0 million piculs ($8.8 millions), and exports to 2.2 million piculs ($6.6 millions) as compared with 3.0 million piculs ($4.1 millions).
