Answers.
The number of Prisoners reported for Prison Offences during the year 1886 was 7,993, out of this number 348 were dismissed, 670 were cautioned and admon- ished, and 6,975 were punished in the manner detailed below, viz.:-
7 with Solitary Confinement on Bread and Water
for two days.
14 with Solitary Confinement on Bread and Water
for three days.
10 with Solitary Confinement on Rice and Water
for one day.
136 with Solitary Coutinoment on Rice and Water
for two days.
439 with Solitary Confinement on Rice and Water
for three days.

19 sent to Separate Cells."
36 were placed on Crank Labour.

The Colonial Chaplain is ex-officio Chuplain of the
Gaol.
Religions serviers are regularly held for the benefit of Episcopalian prisoners, and occasionally for Presly- terial, and other Dissenting prisoners.
The Prison is also visited by Roman Catholic Priests, who hold a service for both European and Chinese prisoners of that persuasion.
A Religions service is also held regnturly every Sunday morning for thù benefit of Chinese prisoners by native clergymen belonging to St. Stephen's Church. Atteminuco Valuutary.
They are allowed free necess to the Prison at such hours as do not interfere with the discipling of the Prison.
Intimation is immediately sent to any Minister or Priest, if at any time a prisoner expresses ʼn desire to see him.

Remissions of sentences have been grunted nøder a system which was taken into consideration in Mus, 1877. viz. all prisoners sentenced to a term of ineur- renation of 12 months and over have been granted a rumission of one-third of their sentence, provided that their conduct during their stay in Gaol was good; others have had portions of their sentences remitted on medial grounds, &e.
