I thought it advisable here to build wooden Bridges resting on piles driven into the sand, as they would have been much injured by natural decay resisted by the white ants which have begun to show themselves in great quantities. Three of these Bridges are quite useless in consequence of the altered level of the adjoining ground by the deposit of the débris alluded to; they will however be left in position during the approaching rains and if no alteration takes place they will be removed altogether to prevent damage to the Road. I anticipate that these ruins will become entirely filled up; therefore I am lucky I did not propose stone Bridges in the first instance. However, there are several places where stone Bridges are indispensable; these will be fully reported upon hereafter when it is necessary to make provision for these permanent erections.
The total expenditure during the year has amounted to £92.5.8d., about 12s. per yard required, exclusive of Bridges repair which amounted to £11.17s. From Laiwan to Tytam, a distance of 24 miles, the expenditure has been only £31.5s. for road repairs or about 6d. per yard. The Bridges have required no repair.
During this year, a small portion of Road was completed for the approaches to the Bridge, which together with the Bridge itself was completed for a charge of £1462.16.2d. From Tytam to Stanley, the improvements to the old Road were nearly brought to a conclusion; the stone arches on this line retarded the work considerably as the Overseers became very sick and the Contractors, taking advantage, executed parts of them in a slovenly manner. This has, however, been set to rights and the whole Road is in very good condition; I have much satisfaction in stating the advantages...
