VII. STAFF.
111. Mr. A. J. C. Taylor, Chief Accountant, proceeded on long leave to England on February 20th, and Mr. W. R. Andrews was seconded from the Supreme Court to act in his place. Mr. Taylor returned to the Colony on November 25th, 1937.
112. Mr. A. E. Perry, Traffic Assistant, proceeded on long leave to England on February 20th and returned to the Colony on November 25th, 1937. His duties, during his absence on leave, were arranged departmentally.
113. Mr. R. S. Bevan, Permanent Way Inspector, returned to the Colony from long leave on January 7th, 1937. Mr. Bevan was invalided from the service and left the Colony on leave prior to retirement on September 18th, 1937. Mr. T. Henderson was seconded from the Public Works Department on December 6th, 1937 to act as Permanent Way Inspector.
114. Mr. D. C. Cathie, Senior Traffic Inspector, left the Colony for England on December 25th, 1937 on termination of agreement.
115. The strength of the Department at the end of the year was 568, comprising 348 monthly paid and 220 daily paid employees as against the previous year's figures of 347 and 219 respectively.
116. The Railway Recreation Club membership at the close of the year was 158. The third annual athletic meeting was held in June at the Kowloon Football Club ground, and for the third year in succession the Locomotive Department won the aggregate challenge shield.
117. The strength of the Railway First Aid Division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade Overseas, at the end of the year, was 36 officers and men, all of whom passed the Annual Examination. Sergeant S.P. de Loberson was promoted to Ambulance Officer. Ten accidents were treated, the most serious being a fractured skull and a fractured forearm.
118. The strength of the Railway Operating Detachment Cadre of the Hong Kong Volunteer Defence Corps on December 31st was 6 officers and 52 other ranks.
119. One fireman was severely scalded and subsequently died as the result of bathing in an unauthorized place in the Works.
