SHING MUN VALLEY SCHEME 2ND SECTION.
231. 24′′ Diameter Trunk Main:-This work was referred to in paragraph 215 of last year's Report. Pipe laying on the upper section was completed in June. Connections with, alterations to, and re-alignment of the lower section of the existing main were completed about the same time. The new main was finally brought into use, after satisfactory tests, on 2nd July. The work consisted of the duplication of a portion of the existing 24" main which delivers water from Shek Lai Pui Service Reservoir to the Garden Service Reservoir. The portion duplicated is from the former service reservoir to Waterloo Road. The length of new main laid was 16,876 lineal feet of which 4,045 lineal feet were of light section and 12,831 lineal feet were of heavy section pipes. The details of the work appeared in last year's Report.
Expenditure
Expenditure to 31st Dec., 1937 $ 31,004.93 $271,719.37232. Third Rapid Gravity Filters: This work was referred to in paragraph 216 of last year's Report. The work was completed on 5th June, 1937, i.e. forty-seven days over the time allowed, for which a penalty of $3,525.00 was charged against the contractor. The filters were brought into use on 14th July, and a fairly high standard of purity of the filtered water was obtained from the start. The cost of the erection of the filters was $51,795.44 and the cost of the plant supplied by The Paterson Engineering Company including freight charges was $162,360.63. During the tenure of the contract the electrical current at the filtration station was changed from single to three phase current by the China Light & Power Company, Ltd.
The work consisted of an additional eight Paterson Rapid Gravity Filters each measuring 24′ x 14′ with a filtering capacity of five million gallons per day together with a chemical house which contains machinery and plant for the addition of chemicals to a capacity of ten million gallons per day. The total filtration capacity at this site (Shek Lai Pui) is now fifteen million gallons per day. Provision has been made for the subsequent addition of a similar set of eight filters when the filtering capacity of the whole plant will be increased to twenty million gallons per day.
