A traffic census was also taken on some of the main roads in the Outside City district. During a twelve hour period (8 a.m. to 8 p.m.) the following results were obtained and these are shown compared with the 1936 figures.

58. Maintenance of Telephones including all Cables:-The whole system of communication including main and sub-exchanges, submarine and land cables, aerial routes, telegraph lines and instruments and office inter-communicating systems were maintained in good order. Alterations and improvements were effected to various existing lines. Telephones for Hong Kong Volunteer Defence Corps' Rifle Ranges were maintained in good order. Bell and telephone circuits were re-arranged in various Government buildings.
