Improvements to Buildings:-The principal improvements carried out were Government House-two new mantel pieces and grates installed, ladies lavatory enlarged, Supreme Court-new strong room built, General Post Office-balconies altered, counter in Treasury altered to give increased public space, Buildings Ordinance Office-new partitions erected, Drainage Office-new flooring laid, Colonial Secretary's Office-partitions altered, Vernacular Middle School-new gateway and steps erected, Tsan Yuk Hospital-new partition erected, new sanitary fittings installed, Hawkers' Office Leighton Hill Road-flush watercloset installed, shades to doorways erected, Sai Wan Ho Market-disused latrine converted to store room, No. 2 Police Station-concrete shades constructed over charge room doors, Violet Peel Health Centre-dark room formed, Leighton Hill Quarters-netting to tennis court extended, Nos. 3 and 4 Ventris Road, division wall erected in yard, Aberdeen Police Station-flush system installed, 297 The Peak new sink installed, drying area formed, 465 The Peak-windows altered, grilles fixed, 525 The Peak-windows altered.

56. Roads and Bridges in City (Maintenance and Improvements):-The surfaces of approximately seventy-one miles of roads were generally maintained in a satisfactory manner.

The following figures show the extent of the operations carried out at the Government Quarry, Tsat Tsz Mui. A total quantity of 13,497 cubic yards of various grades of stones were passed through crushers, of which 6,588 cubic yards were made into tar macadam, 4,017 cubic yards into tar-tops, 163 cubic yards into sand carpeting and 2,729 cubic yards were delivered to various works as the materials came from crushers. 2,197 granolithic paving slabs were provided for footways; fifty-three reinforced concrete standards for railings and thirteen wooden notice boards were made.
