PUBLIC WORKS RECURRENT.
The following is a summary of works carried out under this vote:
HONG KONG.
54. Maintenance of Buildings:-Government Buildings were kept in a good state of repair.
Painting, colourwashing and repairs in accordance with the recurring programme were carried out to one hundred and twenty-nine buildings. Major repairs included the following:-Government House-flat roof and ceiling of ballroom repaired, kitchen repaired and colourwashed, matsheds erected for a reception in honour of His Majesty the King's Birthday, crush hall painted, Queen's College-roofs repaired, Colonial Secretary's Office-floors repaired, canvas sunshades renewed, Central Police Station-ceilings repaired, Harbour Office-typhoon signal mast repaired, Western Market north block-stalls renewed in concrete, Western Market south block-two tanks renewed, Tsan Yuk Hospital-flat roofs repaired, Government Civil Hospital-general repairs were carried out when this building was re-opened to receive cholera patients, King's College-ceiling of assembly hall repaired, Vernacular Middle School-entrance gate repaired, Kennedy Town Slaughter House-crematorium repaired, Wong-neichong Temporary Market-matshed roof renewed, Lockhart Road Market-fence renewed in concrete, Mounted Infantry Horse Lines to Sookunpoo-roof repaired, Mountain Lodge-paths repaired, 157 The Peak-roof repaired, 160 The Peak-colourwashed internally, stove renewed, 403, 404, and 405 The Peak-roofs repaired, 407 The Peak-pitched roof removed and a reinforced concrete flat roof constructed, 410 The Peak-colourwashed internally.
Repairs due to white-ant damage were carried out to the following buildings:-Government House, Old Harbour Office, Queen's College, King's College, No. 7 Police Station, Kennedy Town Hospital, Shek Tong Tsui Market, Sookunpoo Market, Sookunpoo Indian School, Shaukiwan Market, Wanchai School, No. 7 Ventris Road, Kennedy Road Laundries, Aberdeen Police Station, Stanley Police Station, Pokfulam Police Station, Villa Miramere, Gough Hill Police Station, Homestead Flats.
Electrical installations were maintained in good order; 1,663 fans and 370 radiators were cleaned and overhauled. Forty-five fans and motors were rewound and thirty-six radiators were fitted with new elements. Additions and alterations to twenty-eight lights and power points were made in nine buildings. Typhoon lanterns at Lyemun, Gough Hill, Harbour Office, Waglan and Gap Rock Lighthouses were maintained in good order.
