85. Maintenance of Recreation Grounds--The various grounds were maintained in good condition including renovation to a matshed and painting seats at Chatham Road playground. Departmental gangs were employed for the purpose of mowing grass, cleaning ditches, etc.

86. Maintenance of Vehicles Ferry Pier at Jordan Road-This pier was maintained in good condition. The principal items of expense involved in maintaining this pier are as follows:-electric hoists, repairs to fendering, replacement of ballast weight ropes and painting.

The ferry ramps and hoisting gears were maintained and operated in a satisfactory manner.

NEW KOWLOON.

87. Maintenance of Buildings:-Government buildings were kept in a good state of repair. Painting, colourwashing and repairs in accordance with the recurring programme were carried out to six buildings. Owing to financial stringency, the programme work to seven other buildings was postponed. Major repairs included the following:-Lai Chi Kok Female Prison-renewal of stoves and cookers, Wei Hei Wei Quarters-repairs to fireplaces, Kowloon City Police Station—renovate quarters, Lai Chi Kok Signal Station-renew typhoon symbols, Lai Chi Kok Prison-repairs to fireplaces and fences.

Repairs due to white ant damage to the following:-Lai Chi Kok Female Prison, Kowloon City Police Station and Wei Hei Wei Quarters.

The electrical installations were maintained in good order. 988 points in twenty buildings were tested and seventeen inventories of electrical fittings issued.

88. Improvements to Buildings:-A store house erected at Kowloon City Playground and a Petrol Store provided for Shamshuipo Fire Station. A number of minor improvements were also carried out.
