# GRANT SCHOOLS.
13. The list consisted of the same four schools as in the previous year. The maximum enrolment in all the four schools together was 964; the average attendance was 869. St. Paul's Girls' School entered for the first time its students for the School Certificate Examination and obtained a 100% Pass, all four girls entered being successful. Ying Wa Girls' School entered nine girls, five of whom passed. The "Fairlea" and the Victoria Home do not prepare students for this examination, the former's Senior Middle School following the prescribed syllabus for Vernacular Middle Schools to a greater extent than the Senior Middle Division of the other two schools. All four schools have maintained their standard of efficiency.

14. The number of Subsidized Schools has decreased from 190 to 174 (maximum enrolment-15,174; average attendance-14,305), some having been removed from the List, and others having closed of their own accord. The number of Non-subsidized Schools has, however, increased to 556-an increase of thirty-two (maximum enrolment-35,916; average attendance-33,406). There has also been an increase of two in the number of Night Schools, i.e., 49 existing at the end of the year: (maximum enrolment-1,818; average attendance-1,508). The total number of Private Vernacular Schools in the Urban Districts at the end of the year stood at 784 (766 in 1935), consisting of 1 Exempted, 4 Grant, 174 Subsidized, 556 Non-subsidized and 49 Night Schools. The maximum enrolment in these schools was 53,907: 34,044 boys and 19,863 girls (32,564 boys and 18,936 girls in 1935) and the average attendance was 50,114 (47,369 in 1935).
15. The total amount of Subsidies paid during the year was $93,645, working out at about $526 a school, or $6 a head. A unique little school, which has been added to the Subsidy List is the School for Deaf and Dumb, at Kowloon City, the Headmistress having received her special training for this work in Cheefoo. There were 20 students (10 boys and 10 girls) on roll. The results achieved showed very good work done.
16. The Aberdeen Industrial School has grown, the numbers having increased from 199 to 301. It provides a Lower Primary Course, not only for its own artisan students, but also for day scholars, and this Division of the School has proved very popular in the neighbourhood.
17. Physical Training.-Drills of various kinds are included in the curriculum of a number of Vernacular Schools, and in January 1937, Hong Kong saw the first competition held among Vernacular Schools for a banner awarded by the Director of ...
