Q 01

214. Mount Parker Catchwater (Second Section):- The First Section of this catchwater was referred to in paragraph 236 of last year's Report. The Second Section continues from the reinforced concrete aqueduct below the road between Tytam Gap and Shaukiwan Hill and runs in the direction of Shaukiwan for 3,500 feet where it crosses beneath the Island Road by means of a reinforced concrete box culvert 4'-6" by 6'-3" in cross section.

A step-up of forty feet in level is then made to clear the road and the catchwater continues for 2,400 feet where a second step-up, of approximately 120 feet in level, is made above the Shaukiwan Filter Beds to avoid rocky and impassable country. A third step-up is made at a distance of 9,240 from the commencement to a level of 600 A.O.D. for similar reasons. The Intake, at the end of the last portion, taps the main stream draining the Northern slopes of Mount Parker. Between each step-up the catchwater changes cross-sectional area, the different areas being 21.5, 16.7, 11.3, and 5.7 square feet respectively which correspond to a maximum velocity of eight feet per second.

The general construction of the catchwater is similar to that of Tytam Tuk East Catchwater except that there is no dry weather flow channel in the invert and the sidewalls are of 1:4:8 cement concrete in place of lime and cement concrete.

The total length and other data are given in Table XIV.

A contract was let for the work to Messrs. Lam Construction Co. on 2nd February, 1935, for $81,104.60. Good progress was made throughout and the work was completed two weeks under contract time at a cost of $77,772.10.

215. Sluices for Tytam Tuk East Catchwater:- To relieve the overflow of Tytam Tuk Reservoir it was decided to install sluices in the Tytam Tuk East Catchwater so that its discharge may be completely diverted to a neighbouring stream bed when the Tytam Tuk Reservoir is full.

Enquiries were made through the Crown Agents and makers submitted schemes for consideration in Hong Kong. An order for the supply of two roller sluice gates was placed through the Crown Agents with Messrs. Ransomes & Rapier towards the end of the year.
