82. Roads and Bridges (Maintenance and Improvements):— The surface of approximately eighty-three miles of roads was maintained in a satisfactory condition.
Particulars of the additional areas laid with improved surfacing were:-
Tarring and sanding Square yards. 41,931 23″ granolithic paving laid on footways 3,908 Slab paving laid on footways 319 New dry macadam surfacing 34,922 Expenditure $21,993.7983. Maintenance of Telephones:-The lines and instruments were maintained in good order.

84. Maintenance of Sewers, Nullahs, etc.:-Sewers, storm water drains and trained nullahs were cleansed, repaired and maintained in good condition, the open channels and nullahs being cleansed by the Sanitary Department. Sand deposits, as they accumulated, were removed. All metal work in connection with the drainage systems was inspected, and where found necessary repaired and tarred.

85. Electric Lighting:-The total number of electric street lamps in use at the end of the year was 535, an increase of thirty-eight over the previous year.

86. Typhoon and Rainstorm Damages:-Landslips occurred in cuttings on Lai Chi Kok Road, Sha Tin Gap Road and Road from Po Kong to Diamond Hill. The surface to Customs Pass Road was reinstated with decomposed granite and the channels cleared. The surfaces of College Road and Boundary Street East were reinstated where settlement occurred.
Sand and silt were removed from nullahs at Lai Chi Kok, Cheung Sha Wan, Nan Chang Street and from catchpits, channels, storm water drains at N.K.I.L. 1,892 Lai Chi Kok, N.K.I.L. 421, upper Taipo Road, Cornwall Street, College Road and Grampian Road, and from intercepting cut at Lai Chi Kok, where repairs to invert and banks were also carried out.
