213 tap samples of filtered water were examined by the Government Bacteriologist with the following results:

185 shewed B.C.C. absent in 50 C.C.

21 others were above standard

7 were below standard

(86.9%)

(9.8%) (3.3%)

These results compare favourably with those obtained in London and other British Cities.

The mainland supply was treated with 4.29 tons of liquid chlorine which is equivalent to an average admixture of 0.32 of a part per million.

The analyses made by the Government Analyst shewed that the water was of good quality throughout the year.

At the end of the year 112 public stand pipes, 149 pedestal fire hydrants and 351 single underground fire hydrants

were in use.

A measurement of all trunk and distribution mains and back lane pipes of 2" upwards has been made; the position at the end of the year is given in Table XIII.

The various buildings were kept in good state of repair.

House services were constructed, altered or repaired in 4,195 instances and thirty supplies were laid on for building purposes. In addition, 14,210 house service inspections were

carried out.

Particulars of the quantity of water supplied by meters are given in Table IX the total amount being 1,702.59 million gallons. 70.8% of the total consumption has therefore been accounted for by meters compared with 63.7% in 1934.

Water Meters:-There were 9,196 meters in use at the close of the year as compared with 8,944 in 1934. The number of meters examined and repaired was 3,202 of which fourteen were tested in accordance with Regulation 9 of the Water Works Ordinance 16 of 1903.

77. Maintenance of Praya Walls and Piers:-Praya walls and piers were maintained in a satisfactory condition. The following piers required fairly extensive repairs:-Hung Hom, Kowloon Point, Mongkoktsui and Waterloo Road. Replacement had to be made of a considerable number of wooden fenders on the Jordan Road Pier which were broken by the vehicular ferry vessels. Minor repairs were carried out to the remainder of the Government piers in this district.
