REPORT BY THE DIRECTOR OF THE

EVENING INSTITUTE, 1935.

The Technical Institute continued its activities under its new title. Classes opened for seven months and met in Queen's College, King's College, Belilios Public School, Central British School, Wantsai School, Junior Technical School, Quarry Bay, Hunghom and the University for instruction in the following subjects:- Electrical Engineering, Mechanics, Field Surveying, Building Construction, Carpentry, Hygiene, Chemistry, Pedagogy (English and Vernacular), Book-keeping, Shorthand, French and Physical Instruction. Due to lack of students there were no classes held in Architecture, Physics and Cookery. For the same reason the Building Construction, Chemistry and French classes did not resume after the summer vacation. However, it is satisfactory to note that both Stage I and Stage II of Electrical Engineering survived throughout the year. Classes in Physics and Chemistry for Asiatic Probationary Sanitary Inspectors, an Advanced Class in Mechanics and a 3rd Year Carpentry Class were instituted in October. Altogether there were 47 classes (48 in 1934). The number of students enrolled was 871 (959 in 1934).

2. The amount of fees received was $8,329 ($9,103 in 1934). The expenditure was $28,155.79 ($30,481.16 in 1934). The average cost per pupil was $22.76 ($22.29 in 1934).

3. Mr. Ng Fung Chau, Supervisor of Vernacular Teachers' Classes retired on 30th November and was succeeded by Mr. Lo Yuk Lun. Mr. A. O. Brawn, Director since 1930, retired on 31st December and Mr. J. Ralston, M.A. was appointed Director.
