TRAINING OF TEACHERS.
68. Trained Teachers fall into four groups, viz. (1) those possessing a certificate recognised by the English Board of Education or its equivalent, (2) graduates of the University of Hong Kong, (3) those who have passed through one or other of the Government Vernacular Normal Schools and (4) those who have satisfactorily attended either English or Vernacular Normal Classes in connection with the Evening Institute.
69. In the Education Group of the Faculty of Arts at the University there were during the year 49 students of whom 25 were holders of Government Scholarships.
70. Evening Institute training embraces a three years' course and last year 12 Vernacular and 11 English teachers obtained certificates. In all 207 teachers attended Vernacular Classes and 66 attended English Classes.

Chapter VIII.
HEALTH & PHYSICAL EDUCATION.
72. Dr. G. M. Hargreaves, Medical Officer, Dr. Au King and Dr. Wong Hok Nin, Chinese Medical Officers, were on duty throughout the year. Dr. (Mrs.) A. L. J. Dovey, Lady Medical Officer undertook part-time work in connection with girls' schools as from 1st February. On May 1st, a Sanitary Inspector, was seconded for the purpose of making a special survey of vernacular schools. The nursing staff remains as before.
73. Medical inspection of school children: 4,655 examinations (including re-examinations) were carried out at 13 Government and 3 private schools. The figure is smaller than that of the previous year (5,216) on account of fewer entrants: moreover, the extent of examinations at private schools has been reduced.
74. Defects in need of treatment (excluding dental disease) vary according to the type of school. The average figure was 21%.
