PUBLIC WORKS EXTRAORDINARY.

The following is a summary of works carried out under this vote:-

HONG KONG.

BUILDINGS.

103. New Government Civil Hospital:-This work was referred to in paragraph 101 of last year's Report.

Site formation was continued throughout the year.

For a period of several months during the summer difficulties with the Contractors were experienced and very slow progress was made. These difficulties were later overcome and during the latter part of the year progress was good.

The Crown Agents obtained tenders in England for the supply of the steel frame for the main building and the work was awarded to Messrs. Dorman Long & Co. The steel arrived in the Colony during the Autumn and after tenders had been obtained a contract was signed with Messrs. Kin Lee & Co. for its erection. At the end of the year very good progress had been made.

Market-Wanchai:-Sketch plans were prepared for a building of two stories with part basement and quarters for native staff. The ground floor contains thirty fish stalls and the 1st floor twenty-two meat, eighteen vegetable and fifteen poultry stalls. The site, a portion of which was acquired from the Naval Authorities, is at the junction of Queen's Road East and Wanchai Road. Tenders for the site preparation including retaining walls were being called for at the end of the year.

105. Market at Bowrington Canal:-This was referred to in paragraph 103 of last year's Report.

This work consisted of the erection of a market in reinforced concrete to provide accommodation for twenty-four stalls, a poultry killing room, quarters for the Sanitary Department Staff and a latrine in brickwork. The stalls were finished in Terrazzo and suitably fitted up for butchers, fishmongers, poulterers, vegetable and fruit sellers use.

A contract was let combining this and Arsenal Street Market on 5th August to Messrs. Hop Cheong & Co.

The work was completed satisfactorily on 4th December.
