ii. On the same date, one Inspector was recommended for the Royal Sanitary Institute Certificate in Sanitary Science. Including this one, eighteen Inspectors now hold this certificate.

iii. Six Inspectors hold the Royal Sanitary Institute Certificate and two the Certificate of the Liverpool University School of Hygiene as Inspectors of Meat and other Foods.

iv. One Inspector holds the Royal Sanitary Institute Certificate of Tropical Hygiene.

(b) Linguistic.

With four exceptions, all Inspectors, other than Asiatic Inspectors, possess the 1st certificate in Cantonese colloquial; and with seven exceptions, all hold the 2nd certificate. Nine hold the 3rd and one holds the 4th.

ADMINISTRATION.

2. The administrative machinery was unchanged.

3. Two new Health Districts were established during the year.

REVENUE AND EXPENDITURE.

4. Table I shows the comparative statement of the Department's expenditure for the years 1933 and 1934.

5. Table II shows under the various heads the revenue collected by the Department during 1934 compared with 1933; and also the revenue paid into the Treasury in respect of contracts.

6. The decision made in 1933 to reduce the monthly payments from $1,200.00 to $650.00 in respect of the conservancy contract for Victoria and from $650.00 to $325.00 in respect of the conservancy contract for Kowloon was still effective until 15th March, when the Government, instead of receiving monthly sums from the contractor, agreed to subsidize him at the rate of $1,000.00 a month up to the end of August.

The contractor, however, failed to carry out the contracts, and the work was therefore taken over by the Department as from 16th April.
