## SHING MUN VALLEY SCHEME-1ST SECTION.

236. Item Q, Hong Kong Gardens Service Reservoir.-This work was referred to in paragraph 198 of last year's Report. The Reservoir, including the reinstatement of the gardens, and construction of various architectural features, was completed during the year. During construction, slight settlement of the main walls occurred at the N.W. corner of the reservoir and this was effectively dealt with by underpinning and grouting. The Reservoir proved very satisfactory under test and was brought into use on 4th May. The excavation for the Reservoir, which amounted to 25,560 cubic yards, was mainly utilized at the site, the surplus amounting to 6,880 cubic yards being removed and deposited at North Point Reclamation. The Reservoir, which is 276'-0" long by 180'-0" wide, has a capacity at a top water level of 240.25 A.O.D. of 4.957 million gallons, the average depth of water when full being 16'-6". A gravity section division wall of an average height of 10'-3" divides the reservoir into two compartments, the capacity of the Eastern one being 1.590 million gallons, and that of the Western one 1.450 million gallons, whilst the capacity between the top of the division wall and top water level of the Reservoir is 1.917 million gallons. The 24" supply main, which brings water from the Shing Mun Valley via the Cross Harbour Pipe, discharges into a gauge basin in the Inlet Control House from which the water is directed into either or both compartments of the Reservoir by means of two 24" Penstock valves. Automatic recorders to measure the amount of water entering the Reservoir and also the height of the water in the Reservoir have been installed in the Inlet Control House. Two independent 18" diameter draw-off pipes, one from each compartment of the Reservoir and controlled by separate 15" Sluice Valves, discharge into a common 18" main for distribution to the City. The main walls of the Reservoir, the foundations of which required reinforced concrete piles for the North wall and the North end of the East and West walls, were constructed of
