concrete of gravity section reduced where the foundation and backing were satisfactory. The Invert is of concrete 9" thick laid out in bays of 15′-0″ x 12'-0" to correspond with the layout of the reinforced concrete piers which support the reinforced concrete roof of the beam and slab type. Overflow and washout arrangements have been provided.
Reinstatement of, and improvements to, Gardens.-Part of this work, which was designed by the Architectural Office in conjunction with the Superintendent of the Botanical and Forestry Department, was carried out under the contract for the Reservoir and part by the Architectural Office under a separate contract. The new layout consists of the construction of one large flat terrace at a level of about 244.00 A.O.D. This terrace replaces the two old ones situated at levels of 239.00 and 229.00 A.O.D. and incidentally provides a larger flat area. The top of the roof slab was covered with a layer of two feet of garden soil and this has been turfed for the present. The existing fountain on the upper terrace was demolished and has been replaced by a new one in the centre of the new terrace. The work necessitated alterations to the existing approach steps and paths to the site of the Reservoir. A new flight of granite steps was constructed on the East side and a new entrance to the Gardens from Albany Road was made on the West side. Other new features carried out included granite seats on the East and North sides, a shelter and two drinking fountains on the West side, gardener's stores, raised terraces and a water tank on the South side and lavatory and latrine accommodation on the East side.
The following are a few particulars of the works:-Capacity of Reservoir, 4.957 million gallons. Average depth when full, 16′-6″. Area of top water level, 49,680 square feet. Number of piers, 251. Excavation, 25,560 cubic yards. Concrete in walls, 3,697 cubic yards. Concrete in Invert, 1,280 cubic yards. Concrete in piers, 423 cubic yards. Concrete in roof. 1,156 cubic yards. Concrete in Toe walls, etc., 612 cubic yards. Concrete in piles 8" x 8", 1,430 linear feet.
