Road East and Arsenal Street (cn repayment by Police Funds). Typhoon lanterns at Lyeemun, Gough Hill, Harbour Office, Waglan and Gap Rock Lighthouses were maintained in good order. Electrical installations in thirty-one Government buildings were tested and repaired, and sixty-two inventories of electrical fittings issued.

Improvements to Buildings.-The principal improvements carried out under this heading were as follows:-Central Police Station-alterations and additions to Store, Supreme Court-new stair to balcony in Library, Extension to Judges Bench, Post Office Building-concrete staircase to basement, Queens College-widening of entrance to lower compound, Gough Hill Quarters-additional bathrooms, Magazine Gap Police Station-enclosing of verandahs, "Lysholt"-additional W. C., covered way to Servants Quarters, Victoria Hospital-partitions to verandahs, Gough Hill Quarters-gas laid to houses, Horse Lines Hong Kong Volunteer Defence Corps-matshed to Sick Bay, Kennedy Town, Inspectors Quarters-installed W. C. Ellis Kadoorie School-converted Store to W. C's., G.C.H. "A" Block-additional W.C., Caine Road Police Quarters-concrete surfacing to compound, G.C.H. Mortuary-flyproofing, G.C.H. Maternity Block-alterations to provide Office accommodation and Isolation Ward, Mt. Parish Quarters-enlarge Dining Room, Bacteriological Institute-alterations to all doors.

44. Maintenance of Roads and Bridges in City and Improvements to Roads and Bridges In City.-The approximately seventy-one miles of roads were generally maintained in a satisfactory condition. Des Voeux Road West (Centre Street to Western Street) was kerbed, channelled and slab paving laid to footway and 6" cement concrete foundation for sand carpeting to carriageway. West of Centre Street, was laid with 6" cement concrete foundation to receive granite setts.

The following figures show the extent of the operations carried out at the Government Quarry, Tsat Tze Mui, during the year: A total quantity of 15,407 cubic yards of various grades of stone were passed through crushers, of which, 2,661 cubic yards were made into tar macadam, 1,437 cubic yards into sand carpeting and 11,339 cubic yards were delivered to various works as the material came from crushers. 27,040 granolithic paving slabs were provided for use on footways, seventy-three reinforced concrete standards for railings, twenty-two wooden notice boards, five garden seats, two sentry boxes and fifteen traffic blocks were made.
