41. A summary of the works carried out during the year under this vote is given below:-

42. Maintenance of Buildings.-Government Buildings were kept in a good state of repair. Painting, colourwashing and repairs in accordance with the recurring programme carried out to fifty-four buildings. A considerable amount of white ant damage was repaired, the principal buildings affected being:-Government House, Victoria Gaol-Office Block and Warders Quarters, Volunteer Headquarters, Central Police Station-Inspectors Quarters, D.S.P's. Quarters and Barrack Block, Queens College, Old Harbour Office, Beaconsfield Arcade, Harbour Office, Belilios School, P.W.D. and C.S. Offices Old Block, Government Villas, Gough Hill Police Station, Mountain Lodge, "Tanderagee", "Lyemun”, 151, 152 and 156 The Peak, “Dunedin", Aberdeen Police Station, Queen's Gardens Flats, Kings College, G.C.H.-"B" Block and Medical Officers Quarters, Shek Tong Tsui Market, Sai Ying Pun School, Upper Levels Police Station, Kennedy Town Hospital, and Sai Ying Pun Post Office. Major repairs included the following:- Central Police Station-Ruberoid to gutters, Central Market— Ruberoid to gutters, Victoria Gaol-renewal of cell floors in concrete, Post Office Building-repairs to fire escape platforms, Government House-erection of matsheds, platform, scaffolding, etc. for King's Birthday celebrations, renewal of ceiling to Supper Room annexe, Western Market-malthoid to roof and gutters, D'Aguilar Street, Pottinger St. and Wellington Street Latrines-renewal of prisms to pavement lights, Government Villas-renewal of frames and sashes, Mountain Lodge-- renovation to certain rooms, repairs to panelling, jalousies and windows, 410 The Peak-renewal of fire grates, Aberdeen Police Station-concrete surfacing, Queen's Gardens--repairs to verandahs, Volunteer Defence Corps Stables-repairs to matsheds, Ventris Road Quarters-repairs to concrete surfacing and drainage, G.C.H. "B" Block-covered roof with Texaco roofing material, West End Park Quarters--repairs to all verandah roofs. The electrical installations were maintained in good order. 615 fans and 195 radiators were cleaned and overhauled. 61 fans and motors were completely rewound.

20 radiators were fitted with new elements. In connection with additions and alterations to thirty-four buildings work carried out on 140 light and power points.

Improved type traffic lanterns were installed at the junctions of Caine and Hospital Roads, Caine and Arbuthnot Roads, and Queen's Road.
