33. Towards the close of the year, No. 3 Locomotive came in collision with a troop train on the Chinese Section at Shek Tan, and was very badly damaged. This Locomotive is still under repair, awaiting new parts from the makers.

34. Locomotives 2, 7, 9 and 12 were given slight overhauls. Locomotives 2, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 10 were repainted.

35. Motor Coaches.-Motor Coach No. 1, which was derailed and overturned at Mile 10 owing to a broken axle, and very badly damaged, was completely overhauled and new axles fitted to the driving and trailing wheels on the driving bogie. No. 2 Motor Coach also had new axles fitted and minor repairs carried out. Both Motor Coaches were repainted.

36. Coaches.-Seventeen passenger coaches were overhauled and repainted during the year. 2nd Class coaches Nos. 6 and 16 were fitted with a new style of seating, more suitable and comfortable for through passengers to Canton. The seats were upholstered in carriage repp.

37. The seats for Chinese Section 2nd Class through coaches were also supplied by the British Section.

38. Coaches Nos. 4 and 11 were practically rebuilt, owing to the woodwork being found rotten and in an unstable condition. New cant rails, window and door lintels, outside and inside panelling, and teak floor were necessary. They were also rewired and painted.

39. Fifteen other coaches were given slight repairs and repainted.

40. Wagons.-Fifty wagons were repainted during the year. Six were rebuilt, and four given a very extensive overhaul.

41. The three water-wagons Nos. 100, 125 and 126, used with the locomotives hauling express trains to Canton, were overhauled. The springing of these wagons was redesigned and altered, as the springs and axleboxes originally fitted to these wagons were found to be unsuitable for carrying an ever-altering load such as water, and springs were breaking almost daily. Since these alterations were carried out, no further breaking of springs has occurred.

42. The Chinese Section wagon B6, which was awaiting new side channel from England, was reconditioned and returned to the Chinese Section.

43. Workshops.-Only one additional machine was installed during the year, a 6" slotting machine, which has proved a great help and relieves the larger machine.
