201. Shing Mun Valley Waterworks Scheme :-

(a) Raw Water Reception Reservoir.-This work was referred to and described in paragraph 164 (a) of last year's Report.

It was completed in 1926, and on the expiration of the maintenance period on the 30th April, 1927, all the outstanding payments were made.

(b) Filtering Plant and its erection.-This work was referred to in paragraph 164 (b) of last year's Report.

The drawings showing the lay out of the plant and buildings were received from England at the end of April, and Contract No. 44 of 1927 for the buildings and structure was prepared and let to Messrs. Yee Lee & Co. for $52,897 on the 29th June. Excavation work was commenced on 19th July, but owing to inclement weather and the presence of a considerable quantity of rock, poor progress was made until November. By the end of the year all the plant and machinery had arrived, nullah training was completed, and the floors of the lower wash water tank, and of the waste and pure water channels were laid.

(c) Tunnels and South Conduit. This work was referred to in paragraph 164 (g) of last year's Report.

Owing to faulty rock, a portion of the North Tunnel, about 150 lineal feet, had been driven on the curve, and after careful examination it was decided to straighten this section. This work, which involved the excavation of approximately 150 cubic yards of rock and the placing of a similar quantity of displaced concrete in side walls and the regrading of the invert was satisfactorily completed in November.
