47. Maintenance of Buildings. With the exception of Markets and Cattle Depôts, the usual recurring programme for the upkeep of Government Buildings was deferred, and only essential repairs, etc., were carried out as they became necessary.
The Western Market was re-wired for electrical services.
The expenditure amounted to $116,547.22.
48. Improvements to Buildings.—The principal improvements carried out under this heading comprised the following:—
New Law Courts.—Construction of Mezzanine floor in Strong Room. Rented Police Quarters at 299 and 300, Praya East. Erection of Partitions, etc., to provide the required accommodation. Mountain Lodge.—Extension to form Pantry and installation of water carriage system to Servants' Latrines. Ellis Kadoorie School.—Installation of water carriage system to latrines and subdivision of top floor by the erection of glazed partitions. Caine Road Police Quarters.—Construction of two reinforced concrete staircases between main block and servants quarters. Sookunpoo Indian School.—Covered playground.
A number of improvements of a minor nature were also effected to various Government Buildings.
The total expenditure under the Vote amounted to $21,749.03.
49. Maintenance of Lighthouses.—Essential repairs only were done, with the exception of Waglan Lighthouse where painting and colour-washing was carried out.
The expenditure amounted to $1,709.38

Maintenance of Roads and Bridges in City. Improvements to Roads and Bridges in City.§ Approximate mileage 63.—The road surfaces generally were maintained in a satisfactory condition, the asphaltum treatment of carriageways being further extended throughout the City.
The following figures show the extent of the operations carried out at the Government Quarry during the year:
Stone. Various grades passed through crushers:
A total quantity of 14,952 cubic yards, of which 3,949 cubic yards were made into tar macadam, 895 cubic yards into sand carpeting, and 10,108 cubic yards were delivered to various works as the material came from the crushers. Further, 28,012 granite paving slabs were provided for use in footways: 373 reinforced concrete standards, 3′ 8″ in height, for railings and fencing; and 13 concrete nameplates were made.
