51. Maintenance of Roads and Bridges outside City.
Improvements to Roads and Bridges outside City; Approximate mileage 76.-The roads were generally maintained in a satisfactory manner.
Shek O Road leading from the hairpin bend to the junction of Lower Road was treated with two coats of asphaltum.
The following are particulars of the improved surfacing introduced on a number of roads in addition to those mentioned in previous reports:--
Tarring and sanding
2″ granolithic paving slabs laid on footways
Substitution of tar macadam for ordinary macadam
Square Yards.

52. Maintenance of Telephones, including all cables.-
The lines and instruments were maintained in good order. Twenty-one additional telephones were installed.
An underground telegraph and telephone cable was laid between the Courts of Justice and the Royal Naval Dockyard.
A number of alterations and improvements to existing lines were carried out in the course of the year.
A 10 pair telephone cable across Hong Kong harbour was badly damaged by the U.S.S. "Jason" on March 4th. It was repaired and working again by March 6th. It was again damaged on July 21st, evidently by a ship's anchor, and was repaired and working by July 23rd.
The submarine telegraph cable to Gap Rock was broken on September 19th, the cause of the damage being unknown. It was repaired and working again by October 4th. It was badly damaged once more on December 10th, a ship's anchor having picked it up near Gap Rock. The cable was repaired and working by January 5th 1927. (Repairs were delayed by unfavourable weather conditions).
The submarine cable between Lantau Island and the mainland was damaged by an anchor on July 17th. It was repaired and working by July 30th.
