There was no severe out-break of notifiable infectious disease during 1925.

There was however a considerable increase in the number of deaths from Beriberi in the second half of the year following upon the "Strike" at the end of June. This was the chief factor in the rise of the Chinese death rate during the period following the 'Strike".

The so called quarters in the above table are periods of 13 weeks and the table covers the same total period as does that of the weekly death rates given above.

DEATHS FROM CERTAIN NON-NOTIFIABLE DISEASES,

Respiratory Diseases.

1. Excluding tubercular infections; the number of deaths from diseases of the Respiratory System registered during 1925 was 4290 (4319 in 1924) of which 31 were non-Chinese (44 in 1924) and 4259 Chinese (4275 in 1924).

Deaths of children under one year of age accounted for 2182 of these (2288 in 1924).

The deaths ascribed to Lobar Pneumonia and Pneumonia (type not specified) were 787 (703 in 1924) and 356 (254 in 1924) respectively, or a total of 1143.

Of these 404 (363 in 1924) were deaths of children under one year of age.

Broncho-pneumonia accounted for 1735 deaths (2027 in 1924) of which 11 were Non-Chinese (22 in 1924). Of these 1152 were deaths of infants under one year of age (1847 in 1924). Of these infants 4 were Non-Chinese (11 in 1924).
