The Prison Department expended $9,355 more than was anticipated mostly on account of increased staff and the opening of the new Halls at Lai Chi Kok.
Savings in the Medical Department amounting to $91,966 were achieved by deferring expenditure on the equipment for Victoria Maternity and Kowloon Hospitals, construction of a motor launch and minor economies on a number of items.
The Sanitary Department's requirements fell short of the estimate by $184,650 principally due to savings on salaries and special expenditure earmarked for exhumations.
Fewer Building Grants and savings on salaries were chiefly responsible for the saving of $128,468 in the estimate for the Education Department.
Public Works Department showed a saving of $150,948 almost wholly due to lapsing salaries and allowances.
Excess expenditure under Public Works Recurrent was incurred to the extent of $243,981—notable increases being:
