The contract for the erection of the steel framework to the building proceeded satisfactorily and was completed in May.
A contract for the superstructure was let to Messrs. Trollope and Colls (Far East), Ltd., on 25th August.
Work was immediately commenced, and by the end of the year the concrete casing to the ground floor stanchions, and the reinforced concrete to the first floor were completed, while the wood forming to the second and third floors advanced. It was well
100. Sanitary Coolies Quarters at Wanchai.—The pressure of work in the Architectural Office has rendered necessary the engagement of Messrs. Denison, Ram and Gibbs, Architects, to undertake this work.
The building was commenced about October, and by the end of the year it was half-way towards completion. It is built of brick, with reinforced concrete floors and a flat concrete roof. It consists of two rectangular blocks, the upper block being three and the lower ones four storeys high. Sleeping accommodation is provided for coolies on the two upper floors of each block. The ground floor has sleeping quarters for coolies in the Southern block, and a mess room and kitchens in the Northern block. The latter block also has a basement containing storeroom, bath room and lavatories, boiler house, and drying room.
These Quarters will afford accommodation for 350 coolies.
