55. Extensions of Lighting.—214 lamps were erected during the year, 63 being Gas and 151 Electric.

56. Maintenance of Praya Walls and Piers.—The principal items executed under this heading were general repairs to the Western Street Pier, and the Keng Shan Wharf, at a cost of $2,434.04 and $1,862.98 respectively. Considerable repairs to Murray Pier, Blake Pier, the Eastern Street Pier and Victoria Street Pier were also executed.

57. Maintenance of Public Cemeteries.—The cemeteries were generally maintained in a satisfactory condition, numerous graves being repaired, and one of the paths with earth surfacing was resurfaced with 4" cement concrete.

58. Maintenance of Chinese Cemeteries.—The work carried out under this heading has already been alluded to in paragraph 37 of this report:

59. Maintenance of Public Recreation Grounds.—The various grounds were maintained in good order. The use of departmental labour for the purpose of mowing grass, cleansing ditches, etc., was continued.
