REPORT OF THE COLONIAL VETERINARY SURGEON.

Staff.

Senior Inspector Knight was in charge of Kennedy Town Slaughter House throughout the year assisted by Inspectors Coombs and Aslett. Inspector Old was in charge at Ma Tau Kok Slaughter House throughout the year.

Overseer Johanssen continued in charge of Central and Western Markets.

General Statistics.

Cattle The total number of cattle admitted to Government Depots during the year was 64,065 against 54,672 in 1923. In Kennedy Town 53,684 were admitted against 46,418 in 1923. In Ma Tau Kok 10,381 were admitted against 8,254 in 1923. These are the only slaughter houses for cattle in the Colony.

Pigs:-The total number of pigs admitted to Kennedy Town was 345,522 against 301,387 in 1923. This includes 71,462 admitted to Kennedy Town and afterwards removed to other slaughterhouses in the Colony or exported from the Colony.

Sheep and Goats:-The total number admitted to Kennedy Town was 18,076 against 30,451 in 1923. As in the case of pigs this includes 11,786 admitted to Kennedy Town and afterwards removed or exported.

Disease in Depots.

Rinderpest: Twelve cases occurred, imported from West River districts.

Swine Fever:-Forty-one cases were detected.

Anthrax :-Eleven cases of Anthrax were detected in the Cattle Depot. A considerable number of these cases showed no distinctive symptoms and could only be diagnosed microscopically. It is therefore imperative—owing to the fatal nature of this disease that the standard of the efficiency of the inspection staff at the abattoirs should be kept at a high level.

Anaplasmosis:-Eleven cases were detected on slaughter. These cases can only be diagnosed microscopically.

Miscellaneous:-Ninety-seven cases were condemned on slaughter on account of Oedema, fevered condition, etc.
