Owing to the non-delivery of the locomotives and breakdown crane, $100,000.00 and $88,000.00 respectively lapsed, and the $60,000.00 provided for the extension to the Workshops was not required as the steelwork did not arrive from England.
Provision for a boundary wall and shelter at Parkside was made in the Estimates, but as this work was not proceeded with, $3,200.00 lapsed and similarly the $12,000.00 included in the Estimates for the boundary wall from Kowloon Station to Signal Hill.
A sum of $6,000.00 was provided in the Estimates for Turnstiles at Kowloon Station, but only $35.00 was expended in connection with models as the tenders received were unacceptable.
47. In view of closing the Fanling Branch Line at the end of 1924, the new water tanks were not provided and $600.00 lapsed accordingly.
48. The total expenditure amounted to $225,105.75 and the details are shown in Table of Expenditure herein.
49. The Revenue Statements of Earnings and Expenditure take the usual form. The actual Expenditure amounted to $523,513.13 against an estimate of $557,768.00 which shows a saving of $34,254.87.
50. There is a saving of $4,605.76 under Personal Emoluments.
The vote under Maintenance of Ways, Works and Stations was exceeded by $10,420.33, largely due to the inclusion of the salary of an additional Engineer for which no provision was made in the Estimates.
There were small savings under General Staff, and Traffic Department. Under Locomotive, Carriages and Wagons Department, a sum of $11,077.33 was not required, this saving being due to various credits received from Government Departments on account of repairs etc., to Motor Vehicles, and also to amounts recovered from the Chinese Section in connection with repairs of British Section rolling stock damaged on their line.
51. The expenditure under Other Charges, Main Line, amounted to $256,043.29, or $27,942.71 less than the amount provided in the Estimates. On account of decreased mileage run, there was a saving of $10,982.42 under sub-head Coal, and similarly under Oil Fuel for Motor Coaches $6,489.28 and Running Stores $3,455.13.
The total savings under Locomotive, Carriage and Wagon expenses being $20,096.49.
