Under Maintenance of Ways and Works and Stations expenses, a saving of $3,593.04 appears, as owing to typhoon weather the ballast programme was not fully carried out, and painting of the bridge work could not be completed, consequently $2,035.61 and $1,116.49 lapsed.

In the Traffic Department a saving of $1,502.07 was effected by a more economic issue of clothing and the purchase of materials from England. A sum of $1,091.67 was not required under Stores, and also $500.00 provided for hire of Rolling Stock. The total saving in this department was $3,309.38.

The amount unexpended under General Staff was $859.80 and under Miscellaneous Expenses $84.00.

52. Other Charges, Fanling Branch, amounted to $10,272.60, against an estimate of $11,979.00, as expenditure was reduced to the minimum in view of closing the line. The saving amounted to $1,706.40.

53. The Local Traffic earnings show an increase of $108,304.24 when compared with the previous year.

There were 311,292 more local passengers carried than in 1922, partly due to large numbers, who in normal times would have booked from stations on the Chinese Section and have been accounted for as Through passengers, but who were obliged to walk to the trains in British Territory; and to a less extent to the increase in numbers who walked to Sha U Chong and travelled via Tai Po.

54. The receipts under goods have improved, and owing to further lots of vacant land being leased out, the sundry receipts have increased from $21,180.69 to $37,879.14.

55. In 1920 it was decided that the Railway should discontinue its custom of debiting other departments for the transport of Government passengers travelling on duty, and other services rendered, and accordingly the following sums are not included in the Railway Earnings.

Passengers travelling on the Main Line $5,851.28 and Fanling Branch $362.09.

Goods carried over the Main Line $337.42 and Fanling Branch nil.

56. Through and Joint Sectional Traffic Receipts amounted to $153,447.25 or $347,367.65 less than 1922. The fall in the Receipts is entirely due to the conditions prevailing throughout the year on the Chinese Section, and a claim for compensation on account of the suspension of the Through and Joint Sectional Traffic will in due course be presented.
