- R 2

5,298 steamers carrying mails arrived, and 8,364 left, an increase of 701 and 2,000 respectively over the previous year's figures.

Full details are shown in Table I.

3.-REGISTERED ARTICLES AND PARCELS.

The number of registered articles handled amounted to 808,002 as compared with 782,329 in 1922—an increase of 25,673.

The figures for insured articles were 12,070 and 11,661 respectively an increase of 409.

Parcels, ordinary and insured, which were dealt with reached a total of 417,869 as against 343,834 in 1922-an increase of 74,035.

The figures in each of these 3 cases were the highest on record.

Full details appear in Tables II and III.

It should be noted that the 1922 figures given in Tables I and II differ from those shown in the report for that year, and the form of each Table has been altered. The reason for this is that in previous years the figures given were most misleading since both articles locally posted and articles received in transit were included in the "received" columns and again in the "despatched" columns. The totals shown for articles handled were thus very much higher than they should have been.

4.-REVENUE AND EXPENDITURE.

Table IV contains a Statement of Postal Revenue and Expenditure for the year.

The total revenue from the Postal Service in 1923 amounted to $714,340.03, an increase on the previous year of $51,477.92. The net Expenditure for 1923 after deducting Transit Charges etc., for the years 1920, 1921 and 1922 recovered from other Administrations, on the basis of the Statistics taken during May 1921, amounted to $91,639.77.

The balance of revenue over expenditure amounted to $622,700.26.

Table V shows the postage stamps etc., of each denomination issued for sale during the years 1922 and 1923.
