139. Eastern District Filter Beds, &c.-This was referred to in paragraph 127 of last year's Report.
By the end of the year, the excavation was well advanced, the upper tier of beds being completed and the lower one nearing completion, and the reservoir site partly cleared.
The concrete walls and invert for the upper beds were nearly completed, and about one-third of the coping fixed, while the upper conduit and prefilter walls were completed to cope level.
The covered nullah under the embankment was completed and the invert put in under both tiers of beds.
The laying of the 18" C.I. Main from the Tunnel mouth to the Gauge Basin was nearly completed.

At the beginning of the year, definite instructions were sent to the Crown Agents to accept Messrs. Worthington-Simpson's tender for the new Three Million gallon Pumping Unit, consisting of one Pumping Engine and one Boiler, at a cost of £24,864.
It was not possible to put any work in hand by the end of the year, as no drawings had arrived.
