138. Public Health and Buildings Ordinance, 1903,—Compensation and Resumptions.--This vote provided for the resumption of areas required in connection with development schemes, the improvement of public streets, or the provision of scavenging lanes, as well as for the removal of "riding floors" over the ends of streets, and other matters.

Particulars of the various resumptions, conversions, and exchanges effected during the year, the expenditure in connection with which was charged to this vote, will be found in paragraphs 8, 9 and 43 of this Report.

In addition to the amount comprised above, certain other payments were made, the principal of which was $1,937.70 representing interest up to 3rd February on the Old Fire Station Site referred to in paragraph 126 of last year's Report, and $13,869.59 for the erection of a retaining wall etc., required in connection with the road improvement carried out at the Diocesan Boys' School on Inland Lot No. 831, Bonham Road. The sum of $4,320.00 (representing half the cost of the resumption of a portion of No. 76, Bonham Strand, which is required to provide an outlet to the scavenging lane behind new premises on Inland Lot No. 1164, Section A) was paid to Government by the owners of the latter property and credited to this vote; the resumption in question was not, however, effected before the end of the year.
