HONGKONG TECHNICAL INSTITUTE.
SYLLABUS OF STUDIES.
Teachers' Classes for Men, Lecturers:-Mr. B. TANNER,
Mr. F. J. DE ROME,
Teacher's Certificate.
A "Teacher's Certificate" is granted by the Hongkong Government to those who pass the 3rd Year Examination, after passing or being exempted from the 1st and 2nd Years' Examinations.
In order to obtain a Pass, a Student must-
(1) obtain not less than 50% of Full Marks in the whole Examination and also in each Subject, except "General Information", in which not less than 34% must be obtained;
or
(2) obtain not less than two thirds of Full Marks in the whole Examination and not less than 50% of Full Marks in (a) English Composition, (b) Pedagogy, and (c) Practical Teaching.
A Student who passes in all Subjects and obtains not less than 80% of Full Marks in the whole Examination is awarded "Distinction".
Teachers' Class.
First Year.
1.- ENGLISH.
Composition :—General Rules : simplicity; clearness; brevity; emphasis; common errors; sentence and paragraph; parenthesis; punctuation; capitals; syllabic division.
Essays and Letters.
Word Building and Derivation.
Reading. "King Solomon's Mines" will be read in Class. During the Session students will be required to read the following books privately: "Ivanhoe" (with notes) and "Hereward the Wake" (with notes). Students will be expected to show a general
