flea market activity may be halted, but from the records I cannot find any hirer who had to occupy the entire piazza. I therefore consider that the site is a very appropriate one.
The motion is also supported by the Hong Kong Tourist Association, whose letter is placed before you. The Association supports the idea as it would bring about one more tourist attraction and provide more leisure activities to local residents as well as overseas visitors.
In the context of tourism, a basic theme or a series of themes may be developed for the flea market to turn it into a unique tourist spot. Various activities may be organized in the flea market, while the goods and services provided may also be so designed as to reflect the wide interests of various visitors, such as arts, handicraft, antiques, artifacts, entertainment and goods with special characteristics. If possible, the goods and services provided should be different from the ordinary kind to make the market more alluring. Performances such as cultural performances may be organized regularly. The flea market must be kept clean and tidy to maintain its attractiveness. The Hong Kong Tourist Association is most willing to serve as the channel for publicity for the activities of the flea market. It will also provide support to our recommendation in terms of overseas promotion, publicity network and publication.
I therefore hope that Members will support the selection of the Coliseum piazza as the trial site for the flea market project. If the trial proves to be successful, I suggest that the project be extended to the other venues of the Council to help solve the present financial difficulties of Hong Kong and facilitate the various developments. It would also generate additional revenue for the Council. Thank you, Mr. Chairman.
MR. CHAN NOI-YUE (in Cantonese):-Mr. Chairman, I fully support Mr. CHIANG's motion.
As Hong Kong is still suffering from an economic recession, we should try every means to facilitate economic revival, such as setting up some flea markets in response to the concept developed by the Tourist Association. Sites should be leased on a short-term basis to small businessmen for the selling of works of art (as mentioned by Mr. CHIANG just now), handicraft or things with special characteristics so that these businesses may survive. It would also create job opportunities for some of the people in order to stimulate the economy. It is to kill two birds with one stone. What is holding us up?
With these remarks, I second the motion. Thank you Mr. Chairman.
MS. CHRISTINA TING YUK-CHEE (in Cantonese):-Mr. Chairman, I fully support the spirit of Mr. CHIANG's motion, which recommends the setting up of a flea market on Sundays in the Coliseum piazza, because the idea would to a certain extent create job opportunities and provide a tourist attraction which
