Tei and Mong Kok, they lack characteristics and a theme to become tourist attractions. A flea market specific to Hong Kong, which is modelled on the European style of flea markets and painters' piazza and contains the elements of local culture, would be a hot attraction with great commercial value as well as cultural temperament. The Hong Kong Coliseum would no longer be merely remembered for the singers' concerts held there. It would remind people of the Sunday flea market, where one can hunt treasures, get good bargains, watch cultural programmes and buy works of art.
Members will find before them a letter from Mr. Lee Kam-ping, Chairman of the Hong Kong Home for Artists and signatures of Hong Kong visual art workers supporting my motion. Members may wish to have a look at some of the pictures that will be shown. Nevertheless, the most important question is to identify a site for the flea market. In this connection, may I draw your attention to the fact that it is after going over the sites in the area managed by the Council that I have selected the Hong Kong Coliseum as the trial site.
As far as transportation is concerned, there is the new extension to the train terminal which has just been completed. There are also a number of facilities, such as toilets, available to visitors to the flea market. There are also stops for tunnel buses, mini-buses and taxis. The exit being shown on the screen now leads to tunnel bus stops, Hunghom, the Polytechnic University and the Coliseum piazza. The place is rarely used, but as long as proper administrative measures are introduced, I cannot see why the Council could not accomplish the task. This is the carpark where passengers may alight and goods may be unloaded. This picture is the other side of the carpark.
The next picture shows the extensiveness of the Coliseum piazza, which I am sure Members are familiar with. This is the other side of the Coliseum piazza. The Coliseum piazza is in fact made up of three sections but very often only one section is used for even large-scaled activities such as the Moscow Circus. I therefore consider that the piazza is absolutely large enough for the organization of a flea market. Maybe we will continue with the pictures. This one shows the piazza facing the Victoria Harbour. It is very spacious and meets all the conditions required of a trial site. This is the view facing the train station. This one shows the food kiosks outside the Coliseum. Additional income would be secured for them. Three souvenir kiosks will be provided in the Coliseum but there should absolutely be no conflict between them.
Members will learn from the pictures that crowds could be managed through the various gates. As long as management is stepped up, I cannot see anything wrong with the site. Members will see from this picture that there are similar stalls run in the evening.
To the hirers of the Coliseum, the additional flow of people would facilitate the sale of tickets. At present, only the hirers may use the piazza. Members will note from the screen that activities of a large scale are also held there. We consider that if any hirer of the Coliseum needs to use the entire piazza, the
