have a service of less than 2 years whereas 67 of them have served for more than 2 years. As to the remaining 803 staff who also have their contracts renewed, they are part-time temporary staff with no fixed working hours. They work only on a need basis and their working periods are not in a consecutive pattern. For example, ushers of UC venues have to work only when there are performances staged in the venues. Hence, it is difficult to count their years of service.
The third part of the question asks in the past 2 years, how many work injury cases were there which involved temporary staff and how many temporary staff will have their contracts renewed while sustaining work injury or after having taken work injury leave.
Departmental records show that there were 24 work injury cases which involved temporary staff in the past 2 years. The staff in 14 of these cases had their contracts renewed while sustaining work injury after having taken work injury leave. For the remaining 10 cases, 6 temporary staff either resigned before their contracts expired or did not request for renewal of contract; 3 temporary staff's contracts were not renewed by the Department because their posts were no longer needed and therefore deleted, and as a general practice, the Department would not renew their contracts; and temporary staff's contract was not renewed because his health condition rendered him unsuitable for the job.
The fourth part of the question asks about the channels for temporary staff to express views and make complaints.
The temporary staff may direct their views or complaints to their direct supervisor or person-in-charge of the office in writing or verbally in case of any dissatisfaction towards their work. Moreover, they can lodge complaints with the staff complaint office of the Department.
Ms. Grace AU YUK-HAN (in Cantonese):—I have five follow-up questions. According to the first part of the reply document, there are at present 1,693 temporary staff. How many of them are part-time staff and how many of them work fixed hours?
Secondly, for those observing fixed hours, what is the longest period of service?
Thirdly, did any of our temporary staff make appeals or complaints to the Department concerning renewal of contracts?
Fourthly, does the Department have at this stage any plans to or has it considered to do away with temporary staff?
Fifthly, was there ever any temporary staff of the Department who successfully switched to permanent staff?
