The minutes of the meeting held on 8 April 1997 were confirmed.

The following paper was laid--Report to the Urban Council by the Secretary, Urban Council for the month of April 1997.
III QUESTIONS
CHAIRMAN (in Cantonese):-As Mr. Ronnie Wong Man-chiu is on business and as yet unable to attend the meeting, we proceed to the second question first. Will Mr. Joseph CHAN Yuek-sut ask his question and Mr. LAM Man-fai as Chairman of the Information Technology Sub-Committee answer it?
(2) MR. JOSEPH CHAN YUEK-SUT asked the following question (in Cantonese):-'Since the Urban Council services provided to citizens are generally computerized, and progressively more Urban Services Department staff and citizens are using computers, the following symptoms may occur as a result of frequent usage of Visual Display Unit (VDU): (i) cataract; (ii) eye strain, (iii) facial dermatitis; (iv) body fatigue; (v) photosensitive epilepsy. What measures are adopted by the Council and what appropriate guidelines are given to VDU users to safeguard their health?”
MR. LAM Man-Fai, CHAIRMAN OF THE INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SUB-COMMITTEE, answered as follows (in Cantonese):-This question asks about the measures adopted by the Council to safeguard the health of VDU users including departmental staff and members of the public.
In order to protect the health of the staff and members of the public who regularly use the VDU, the Department has adopted appropriate measures such as providing a comfortable and well-illuminated working environment, suitable furniture and display screens with adjustable brightness control device, etc.
Moreover, copies of the 'Health Guide on the Use of Visual Display Unit' published by the Occupational Health Division of the Labour Department, which lists out the possible effects of VDU operation on the health of VDU
