DEMOLITION.

2.

All plants in KOWLOON were reviewed in the light of their stooks, and machinery which would be of use to the Japanese.

It was decided, in view of the fact that a large proportion of the small machine tools in the Hong Kong Whampoa Dook Co.'s installation could not be removed or destroyed with the few personnel available, that the following plants were the only ones of sufficient size to warrant destruction prior to withdrawal from the Mainland:—

HongKong a Whampoa Dook Goo Cosmopolitan Dook.

Green Island Cement Co.

China Light & Power Generating Station.

V.S. Bailey & Co. Shipyard.

Texaco Petrol Storage Installation.

Socony Petrol Storage Installation. Kowloon Canton Railway, Workshops.

The measures (exclusive of shipment elsewhere) to be taken to prevent plant, tools or stock falling into enemy hands for the various installations are summarised below:-

Hong Kong a Whannon Leak Co.

Plant. A Demolition Scheme for the major machines such

oranes has been prepared by the R. N. and will be carried out by naval personnel assisted by such of the Dockyard personnel as can be made available. This scheme cannot be comprehensive owing to the limitations of time and personnel and will involve the abandonment of numerous machines in a useful condition, as already mentioned in para. 1.

Stocks and Tools.

The Hong Kong Whampoa Dock Co. forma a Company on Mobilisation which is part of the Hong Kong Engineering Corps. This Corps will work for the Royal Engineers in war and will replace normal contractors whose labour will probably not be available.

The Dock Co. have undertaken to move the necessary plant and equipment for the Company in their own lighters to Hong Kong when the Mainland is evacuated. In addition they will move as much as possible of their stocks of timber, steel plate and other useful stores as can be got away in the time available.
