Engine-room staff have been warned by Chinese and (they say) a Japanese policeman visiting their homes outside diplomatic quarter to leave their employment by August 10th and with the best will in the world fear they may be [gp.omtd.]

Commandant has emergency crew of soldiers ready to keep
correct, but electric plant, water and sanitation entirely, dependent on cante Mained running, as temporary expedient but Office of Works resident
nothing better
4/8 engineer here is not qualified engineer capable of teaching
and supervising them and Mr. Alston is only part-time employee (and company asks Office of Works architect to explain his
position to you).
In these circumstances I am obliged to recommend that
Commander-in-Chief be asked to provide [? one] engine room
artificer, one electrician and one stoker as soon as possible
who can be accommodated and rationed in the British Embassy
Guard.
