VISITING COMMITTEE.

The Visiting Committee consisted at the beginning

of the year of H. . Judge, (Sir Allan Hossop), the Registrar of H. M. Supreme Court, (Mr. C. H. Haines), Mr. Harold Porter, C.H.G., Mr. R. G. McDonald and H. M.

Consul, (r. A.G. N. Ogden).

fter Mr. Haines went on leave his place was taken by the Acting Registrar, Mr. I. T. Morris, and the place of the late Mr. Harold Porter was filled by Brigadier-General Facnaghten, C. M. G., D.3.0.

The British Prisoners were visited by a member of the Committee twice a month and meetings of the whole Committee were held on January 15th, July 30th and October 15th, the last two meetings being held at the Shanghai Municipal Prison at Ward Road. The usual warterly Meeting was not held in April owing to the fact that no British prisoners had been held in Ward Road Gaol between

January and May 1938. For the same reason the first

meeting was not held in the Gaol but in the Judge's

Chambers.

NUMBER OF PRISOIRS.

The total number of prisoners during the year was 19 of whom 16 were Indian (as compared with 36 and 26 in 1937). The largest mumber in custody in any one month was 8. A detailed list of prisoners is appended.
