If the correspondence has never been submitted
to you, I should be grateful if you would ask to
see Foreign Office letters Nos. F 416/362/10, of
the 24th January, and F 1751/382/10, of the 3rd
March, on the subject of an Air Mission to China.
You will see from Clark Kerr's telegram No.
26, of the 13th January, enclosed in the former
letter, that General Chiang mai-shek originally
asked for one British air adviser, but as Major
Boyle pointed out in his letter S 43398/A. D. 1, of
the 11th February, what really seemed to be wanted
was a small air mission. The matter was subsequently
discussed with General Chiang, who suggested sending
a single officer out to investigate the whole
situation and submit recommendations. to be followed
later by a small mission (see Chungking telegram
