REPORT ON SHIPPING AND INDUSTRIAL ACTIVITY, 30th JUNE, 1939.

SHIPPING.

The firm tone reported last week was not maintained and the market is much easier. Practically no enquiries were received and only one fixture reported the 8.8. "Gunda" for Vladivostock trading for six months.

In the coastal trades, the situation at Tientsin is obscure. As far as can be ascertained, exports continue but only in small quantities; steamers have been able to reach the Bund and discharge, but recently shippers have received telegraphic instructions to

cease shipments owing to inability of consignees to arrange delivery from the Concessions to Native City. Passengers, however, are able to travel to and from Tientsin without much interference. Wi th the blockade of Swatow, the prind pal centre for imports from North China, support from Chefoo, Weihaiwei and Shanghai is now a very uncertain quantity; small shipments continue to Hong Kong. The recent closure of Foochow is further intensified by the inminence of Japanese Naval and Military operations in that area; the ports of Wenchow, Hsing Hwa, etc., also are affected. The only bright spot is Pakhoi, where steamers continue to obtain good cargoes. Though Hoihow is opened, no cargo is offering; it is understood exports are being withheld pending promulgation of new regulations by the Japanese; reports indicate, however, that propects are not good in view of the political situation in the interior.

No change at Canton, which port is, to all intents, a Japanese "re served" area. The N.K.K. "Hengshan Maru" arrived at canton on 21/6 and dis charged a considerable quantity of "bag" cargo; she loaded about 700 tons of general cargo. The N.K.K. "Sungshan Maru” arrived 23/6, discharged a large cargo, chiefly flour, and sailed on 24/6 with some exports and a fair number of deck passengers.
