Japanese military operations near Hong Kong frontier.

Copy telegram from General Officer Commanding Hong Kong No. 5372 of 16th August.Japanese troops and air- craft appeared on (?western) section of frontier early on 16th August. No bombing or firing has been reported and there have been no incidents. Describes disposition of Japanese troops and precautionary measures taken by British forces. All Japanese troops have received strict orders to respect Hong Kong frontier. Object of operations is probably partly against guerillas and in Registry 19th Aug. 1939. partly to close communications with China. It is

estimated that 5,000 refugees entered the Colony on 16th August.
